Most of us have been trying to figure out who we are… trying to find ourselves… getting in touch with our inner being… as if it is a secret out there somewhere. How’s that working out for you?Sometimes we find ourselves but we usually accept the discovery. What if you don't like who you are?why not be somebody else?It seems that we are resigned to being who we are and we spend much of our time, love and resources trying to change our circumstances. What if we have it backwards? What if, for the most part, we cannot choose or control how life will come at us, but what if we could pick whop we want to be?You may or may not be religious, but if you know much about the sayings of Jesus... he told us to be good soil, be a faithful servant, the true friend as if we could choose to be those things! He implied that each of us can choose the kind of person we will be.At the end of the day, how many of us can truly control our circumstances on a sustainable level? But each of of can choose... everyday... what kind of person we will be.If that is true… then who are you becoming?
I think the Beatles were on to something. It is all about love, but maybe not like we think. Everyone can look around and see that much of our lives, commerce and culture is somewhat linked to the search for love. We are all looking for it! Whether we are looking for love in all the wrong places or even in the right places, we are looking for love… for ourselves. What if we don’t need to look for love? What if love has already found us? I'm going to go with what the Beatles wrote, with the exception of one little word…”All you need is TO love.” A strange thing happens when we love others: when we become connected to God, His love flows through us to others. As conduits of His love, we don't run out or get burnt out - it is an unlimited supply. But the best part is that as His love flows through us, it heals us... we begin to become whole. Broken people are most often looking to have love poured into them until they become whole. Sadly, many never realize that the path to healing is though loving others. What about you? Do people want to be around you because you love others? Or are you still waiting to be loved the way you feel you really deserve?
Do you know what your one thing is? In the movie, City Slickers, Curley(Jack Palance) holds up a gnarly index finger and tells Mitch (Billy Crystal) that life is all about the one thing. Remember that? I think he's right. I don't think it means that life all comes down to one moment or one activity or that you should only do one thing well. I think it means that your life has one reason, one mission, one filter that seems to be the undercurrent for everything else. Do you know what your one thing is? I read a blog from a guy named Paul and he talked passionately about people understanding "what really mattered." I think he meant the "one thing." He also said he had not fully accomplished the mission but "this one thing I do. Forgetting the past and moving toward the future." Sounds like he was focusing in on his thing. Do you know what your one thing is? I'd love to hear.
