    The God of Misison

God’s church falters from exhaustion because Christians erroneously think that God has given them a mission to perform in the world. Rather, the God of mission has given his church to the world. It is not the church of God that has a mission in the world, but the God of mission who has a church in the world. The church’s involvement in mission is its privileged participation in the actions of the triune God.

How do you reconcile the words of Jesus, "Go therefore and make disciples" with the idea that we are not to accomplish a mission?

    Re: The God of Misison

Whose mission is it? Ours or God's?

The issue here is not that we are to accomplish a mission, but rather that God is accomplishing His mission. The Missio Dei is God's mission. The church joins what God is doing! The church is not an end in itself; the church is pointing beyond itself to the kingdom of God.

Dave, I agree with the premise of your theology of missions. I wonder why God didn't say it the way you did? I'm not trying to be quip, i just think that sometimes God simply wants us to follow through with what He asks us to do. Being on mission with God is exhausting, being on a mission without God is much more exhausting, on top of that it's futile. Thanks for the dialogue.

    Re: The God of Misison

Our lead pastor recently turned the phrase nicely for our folks with respect to this kind of mentality. It was something along the lines of, "For a long time we've been convinced that we need to adopt this 'Kingdom Agenda' as disciples. This supposes a certain ability to predict God though, so from now on we're just going to do our best to not have an agenda of any sort and instead commit ourselves to the daily exercise of seeing what God is up to and joining Him."

I think it's directing folks to the same mentality, I just found that it seemed to connect with some folks because of bringing this idea of "agenda" into the discussion. We really like to believe we're on the mission, but our tendency seems to often be to try to reason out what we should be doing and come up with plans that make sense instead of following the Spirit which often does seemingly nonsensical things.

"Turn the other cheek" was never meant to be an idealistic aphorism, but instead a way of living.
